COMMERCE EDUCATION AT DINHATA COLLEGE – A RICH LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE, DISCIPLINE AND CULTURE
Dr. Surya Narayan Ray,
Assistant Professor in Commerce,
Dinhata College
The teaching of commerce started at Dinhata College from the very inception of the College itself, which was in the year of 1956. In the early days, commerce education at Dinhata College followed the Pre-University model of one year before entering into the College. Initially, commerce education at Dinhata College was not a Degree Course. At the beginning, the two-member Commerce Department at Dinhata College was headed by Naresh Chandra Bhoumik, who hailed from Jalpaiguri. Afterwards, Naresh Chandra Bhoumik shifted to Katwa College before heading to Jalpaiguri as the then-Principal of the Jalpaiguri A.C. College of Commerce.
In 1962, the commerce education at Dinhata College was converted to a Degree Course at the Under-Graduate Level. Around that time, Krishnendu Dey arrived at the commerce scene at Dinhata College in the academic year of 1960-61. From the 1967-68 academic year, the B.Com Degree Honours Course started at Dinhata College. Krishnendu Dey became the central figure around whom the commerce education blossomed at Dinhata College. In other words, the arrival of Krishnendu Dey at Dinhata College heralded in a golden era of commerce education not only in Dinhata but in the whole region of North Bengal. Scores and scores of commerce students travelled from far and wide to Dinhata College for studying commerce.
After the arrival of Krishnendu Dey, a host of renowned teachers also came to teach commerce at Dinhata College. Amongst them, the names of the commerce teachers that readily come to the mind are that of Chittoranjan Sammaddar and Arajit Kumar Pal. Together, the three of them formed a golden triumvirate or the three musketeers. They made an exceptional team for imparting commerce education that incorporated the essential elements of discipline and culture into commerce teaching. Commerce education thus transpired the boundaries of the subject, to become a ‘complete education’. Slowly, Dinhata College became a centre of excellence for commerce education, that has since then been unparalleled in the annals of North Bengal University.
An attempt to chronologically document the sequential arrival of some of the commerce teachers to Dinhata College has been depicted below:
Interestingly, the period of 1962 to 2003, spanning over 40 years, can be termed as the GOLDEN PERIOD OF COMMERCE EDUCATION AT DINHATA COLLEGE. Without a trace of doubt, Krishnendu Dey was the doyen amongst all the commerce teachers at Dinhata College during that golden period. He was like a master craftsman at work while he taught the nitty-gritty’s of taxation to the budding commerce students. Similarly, Chittoranjan Sammaddar was a versatile and extremely popular teacher who was adept at teaching business organistion, management, economic geography to the students. Arajit Kumar Pal was a strict disciplinarian who was an expert at teaching management while Susanta Chandra Talukdar was proficient at teaching information technology and law. Badal Maity was skilled at teaching auditing. Mohammed Saukat Ali is adept at teaching costing, financial accounting, taxation and other subjects. Currently, he is the Head of the Department of Commerce at Dinhata College.
Except for the turmoil during the period between 1971 and 1975, the golden period of commerce education at Dinhata College saw a succession of meritorious students who passed out from Dinhata College with flying colours. Many of them are holding coveted posts in big organistaions world-wide. Many a times, the commerce students of Dinhata College adorned the top ranks of B.Com. Examinations results under the North Bengal University. However, coinciding with the exit of the golden triumvirate of commerce education from the Dinhata College, the golden period of commerce education at Dinhata College came to an untimely end.
